Welfare and Disability
We are very keen to encourage students with disabilties or other welfare-related issues to join the Athletics Club. All of our socials are in wheelchair-accessible locations, and we will make every effort to ensure that all members are given the support they need to fulfil their potential in athletics.
If you struggle to participate in the club training sessions, we will try to put you in contact with one of the many disability-sport organisations in the area so that you can get the coaching you need and deserve. Students who require physical assistance can take advantage of the University's Sports Buddy Scheme, a volunteering scheme in which you will be paired up with another student, who will help you to complete your training sessions.
Whether you are experienced in athletics, or want to try it for the first time at University, we have the local contacts to provide expertise in disability athletics, with experience from grassroots to elite level. Through working with local organisations, such as CP Sport and Nottingham City Council, we aim to make sure that students with disabilties can access the athletics coaching they require whilst still feeling very much a part of the Club.
BUCS now includes disability athletics events in its national outdoor championships. There are only a limited number of events, and qualification standards may be high, but any students who wish to compete and who meet the qualificiation standards will certainly be allowed to represent the University at these championships, and we will work hard to ensure you can meet these goals.
Athletes with impairments which affect their ability to run, such as loss of hearing/sight, mental health issues etc., are more than welcome in this club! We are a very inclusive club, united by our common love of athletics, and anyone who wants to can join. If you feel you have a condition or impairment which affects your ability to perform, please do not hesitate to contact the Club's Welfare Officer Lottie Richardson, and we will help you overcome these barriers as best as we possibly can!
